The crash of US-Bangla flight BS-211at Tribhuvan Airport in Katmundu of Nepal is the deadliest ever in the history of Bangladesh. While filing this report, AP claimed the casualty at 50 while state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam said he had confirmed news of 45 deaths. However, the number of Bangladeshis killed in the crash could not be ascertained while filing this report around 9pm. There were 71 people on board the Canadian-made Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 turboprop plane: 32 Bangladeshi passengers, 33 Nepalese, one Chinese and one from the Maldives along with 4 crew members.
Earlier, on 5 August 1984, Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight Fokker F27-600 crashed into a marshland near Zia International Airport (now Shahjalal International Airport) in Dhaka while landing amid inclement weather.
The aircraft was performing a scheduled domestic passenger flight between Patenga Airport, Chittagong and Zia International Airport, Dhaka. During the 1984 crash, all the 45 passengers and 4 crew members on board the flight were killed. The captain of the flight was Kaniz Fatema Roksana, well known as the first female commercial pilot of Bangladesh.
