Reformation of quota system demanded

Job seekers and students under the banner of ‘Sadharan Chhatra Odhikar Sangrakkan Parishad’ (Council to Protect Rights of General Students) organized a cycle rally demanding that the existing quota system in government services be reformed. The rally started from Teachers Students Center(TSC) of Dhaka University where a number of job seekers and students from different universities and colleges joined thje event with cycle and wearing T-shirt written that ‘Change quota system’. The rally later ended in front of central library of the university after moving several roads in the capital city. Their five-point demand, including keeping 10 per cent quota for freedom fighters and others, and the rest 90 per cent on merit basis in government jobs.

Currently, 44 per cent are recruited on merit and the remaining 56 per cent on privilege allocated under various quotas. Their other demands- recruitment of meritorious students in government jobs if eligible candidates are not found under the quota system, stop special recruitment under a fix quota, uniform age limit in government recruitment process and scope for switching job under quota facility to another one only on the basis of merit. Shamim Ali, one of the protesters from Dhaka College said, “This is time we are doing protest procession but no one is paying heed, this is not justice, this is a clear discrimination nothing else.”

Protesters said that they will go tougher movement until their demand is not met. Hundreds of job seekers staged demonstrations at Shahbagh intersection in the capital on February 25g demanding that the quota system in government jobs be reformed. The job seekers from different colleges in the capital and Dhaka University, under separate banners, including General Students’ Rights Protection Mancha (Sadharon Chhatra Odhikar Sangrokkon Mancha), took position on the road stretching from Shahbagh intersection to TSC of Dhaka University.
