Mehedi Hassan Limon of Pabna Rifle Club earned the distinction of winning the first gold medal of the First Bangladesh Youth Games at National Shooting Range in the capital yesterday when he became first in the boys’ .177 Open Sight Air Rifle event scoring 24 points.
Fazle Rabbi of Gulshan Shotting Club bagged the silver with 239 points and Fardan Mohammed Aarna of Netrkona Rifle Club earned the bronze with 236 events. All the six events of shooting were finalized on the day.
And in the swimming Khulna’s Ariful Islam in the boys section and Summa Khatun in girls section stole the show winning four golds, while Summa won a couple of gold medals at Syed Nazrul Islam Swimming Complex in Mirpur.
In Football, Sylhet Divisiona and Rajshahi Division sealed their final spots of the Bangladesh Youth Games beating their respective rivals in the semi-finals at the Bir Shrestra Shaheed Shipahi Mostafa Kamal Stadium in Kamlapur.
In the day’s first semi-final match, Sylhet Division came from behind to thrash their Dhaka counterparts by 5-I goal and confirmed their spot in the final of the Games. Isharul Islam broke the stalemate of the hardly-contested match and put Dhaka Division ahead in the 62nd minute. But Habibur Rahman restored the parity just three minutes after Isharul’s lead-taking goal. Russell stretched the advantage with his double strike in the space of 11 minutes though he added another goal after Habibur Rahman’s second goal in the 108th minute.
Rajshahi Division also won their semi-final encounter in same manner what Sylhet did. Mirajul Islam sent Rangpur Division into the lead when he struck in the 13th minute. In the penultimate minute of the first half Shakib leveled the margin for Rajshahi Division. Pias in injury time scored the winning goal for Rajshahi.
The final of the boy’s second will be held at the same stadium on March 14, two days before the end of the country’s biggest sports carnival for the youth athletes.
In volleyball, Barisal Division beat Dhaka by 3-1 sets, Rangpur routed Rajshahi by 3-1 sets and Sylhet Division mauled Mymensingh by 3-2 sets in boys’ section. In girls’ section, Khulna Division blanked Mymensingh by 3-0 sets, Chittagong downed Sylhet by 3-0 and Chittagong defeated Khulna by three-nil sets.
