Adequate security measures taken for Sundarganj by-polls

GAIBANDHA: Adequate security measures have been taken to hold by-election to Sundarganj parliamentary constituency on March 13 in a free, fair, neutral and acceptable manner, reports BSS.

Sources concerned said sufficient members of security forces, including BGB, RAB, police and Ansar, would be deployed there side by side with striking forces on the day of the by-election.

Talking to BSS, Gaibandha Police Super Mashruqur Rahman Khaled said necessary security measures have been taken to hold the by-election peacefully.

The SP said the experience acquired from the last by polls held on March 21, 2017 would be utilized in the forthcoming by-election.

An initiative has also been taken to hold the election properly in char areas of the upazila so that the voters could go to the voting centres without any hindrance and come back home safely after casting their votes, he also said.

A total of 3, 38,556 voters including 1, 64,934 male ones would cast their votes at 109 centres of all the 15 unions and one pourasabha of the upazila on March 13, the sources said.

The parliamentary seat fell vacant for the second time following the death of Golam Mostafa Ahmed MP in a road accident.

Man gets life term for murder

Thakurgaon: A court here yesterday sentenced a man to life term imprisonment for killing his neighbor in Baliadangi upazila in 2012, reports UNB.

The lifer is Abdul Khalek, 38, son of Rahim Uddin of Mechoni village of BaliadangiUpazila.

The court also fined him Tk 10,000, in default, to suffer three months more rigorous imprisonment.

According to prosecution, there was a long standing dispute between Khalek and his neighbor Shah Alam over land.

Following the dispute, Khalek stabbed Alam’s father Abdul Haque when he was asleep on August 9, 2012 and fled away, leaving him critically injured. He died at a hospital on the same day. Later, Alam filed a case against Khalek.

After examining all the records and witnesses, Thakurgaon Additional District and Sessions Judge Haidar Ali handed down the verdict.

Roof collapse kills schoolboy

Faridpur: A student of a primary school, who was injured in roof collapse, succumbed to his injuries yesterday morning while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital, reports UNB.

    The deceased was identified as Shahed, class five student of Lokhartek Government Primary School in Sadarpur upazila. Deceased’s uncle Shapon confirmed his death to UNB.

    Earlier on Saturday, at least three students, including Shahed, were injured as roof collapsed on them when they were playing under the roof of an abandoned building in Lokhartek area in the upazila. Of them, Shahed and Uzzal were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital in critical condition.

Later, he was shifted to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases & Hospital in Dhaka from where he was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Later, he was again shifted to Islami Bank Medical College where he died around 8:30am, he added.

Contacted, Sadarpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Purobi Goldar said the building was declared abandoned long ago.

Two killed in road accident

Two people were killed and six others injured in a road accident on Mymensingh-Haluaghat road in Borovilla area of the district yesterday noon.

The deceased were identified as Lovely Akhter, 42, and Taher Ali, 65 of Mymensingh.

Police said the accident occurred when a Mymensingh-bound human hauler collided head-on with a truck in the area, leaving eight human hauler passengers injured.

Among the wounded, five were rushed to Phulpur Upazila Health Complex where Lovely and Taher succumbed to their injuries and three were shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
