Abdus Salam Murshedi, former national footballer and ex-president of Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), is likely to get Awami League (AL) nomination from a Khulna constituency in the next general election.
Salam told The Independent yesterday that he is very much hopeful of getting the nomination after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina introduced him as a new member of the ruling AL at a public rally in Khulna on March 3.
Murshedi also delivered a speech at that rally. He is likely to get nomination either from Khulna-2 or Khulna-4 constituency. People in these two constituencies have already started lobbying for him, claimed Murshedi, a leading businessperson of the country.
“After a successful football career, I become an organiser and was elected senior vice-president of Bangladesh Football Federation for the last two tenures. I also worked sincerely for the business community and once I was elected president of BGMEA,” he said.
“Now I want to begin a new innings in the political arena,” asserted Murshedi.
Replying to a question, he said, “If I don’t get nomination, it would not bother me. I love the people of Khulna and want to work for their welfare.”
