A ‘high profile’ name is going to be Bangladesh’s head coach, a post that has been vacant since the sudden resignation of Chandika Hathurusingha in last September. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan though disclosed the matter to the media in Sri Lanka, he left everyone curious by not revealing the name.
The BCB boss said the board has already finalised the head coach, who is expected to take charge by the first week of April.
“We have finalised our head coach and he is expected to join the team by the first week of April. At the moment I am not going to disclose the name but I can say that he is a well known figure. He is not someone like Chandika Hathurusingha who at the time was unknown when he was appointed as Bangladesh coach,” Nazmul, who arrived in Sri Lanka yesterday night, told reporters at the Taj Samudra hotel in Colombo.
As he promised earlier, Papon joined the team at the outset of their first match. In his quest to look after the team well and helped the bounce back after their two disastrous series at away and home, Papon urged the players to play without any pressure. Hathurusingha resigned from the head coach's position midway through the tour of South Africa in September last year. Richard Pybus and Phil Simmons have, in the meantime, given interviews to BCB, but the board did not show much interest in either candidate due to an apparent lack of interest from the cricketers.
Bowling coach Courtney Walsh has been given the role of interim head coach for the Nidahas Trophy.
