Pragmatic steps reviving past glory of jute, say speakers

RANGPUR: Officials and experts at a post-rally discussion said the pragmatic steps taken by the present government have started reviving the past glory of jute, boosting its production and demand both at home and abroad, reports BSS.

They came up with the observation at the discussion arranged at the conference room of the deputy commissioner on Tuesday afternoon in  observance of the National Jute Day- 2018. The district administration in association with the Directorate of Jute under the Ministry of Jute and Textiles organised the rally, followed by discussion.

Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib attended the discussion as the chief guest with Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Rabiul Islam in the chair.

Acting President of district Awami League Mamtaz Uddin Ahmed, Principal Scientific Officer of Rangpur Regional Station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute Dr Abul Fazal Mollah, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension Dr Sarwarul Haque, spoke as special guests.

In their speeches, the speakers said jute was the biggest source of export earnings for many decades and Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman realised importance of jute and nationalised all jute mills.

Dr Haque said the demand for jute is increasing abroad as the fibre is also being used as composite jute textile, construction materials for earthquake surviving houses and geo-textiles.

Dr Mollah said the pragmatic steps and initiatives taken by the present government have started reviving the jute sector.

The chief guest lauded the government steps to increase multi-dimensional use and revive past glory of the golden fibre through enhancing its cultivation, production and export of raw jute and jute-made products.
