Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) authorities have expelled three students for alleged links to militancy. Riad, a third-year student of mechanical engineering, was expelled for one term and two other unidentified students were expelled from their resident hall yesterday, BUET officials said. The varsity syndicate took the decision at an academic council meeting, said BUET vice chancellor Prof Khaleda Ikram. Prof Delwar Hossain, director of the students’ welfare centre of BUET, also confirmed the matter.
Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists, led by Nazrul Islam Hall unit acting president Anwar Habib, had caught 10 students with alleged militant links on Sunday night and handed them over to BUET authorities. They were then interrogated by the authorities. Two of them were let off with stern warnings, while five others had to give written undertakings to the university.
They were identified as four first-year students, Shuvo, Fysal, Minar and Nadif; two second-year students, Tareq Reza and Lutfor Rahman; two third-year students, Riad and Rafi; and a fourth-year student, Iqbal Ebu. Another student was not identified. All the nine students identified were from the mechanical engineering department.
The general secretary of BUET’s BCL unit, Kanok, said the students were caught with books, CDs and documents relating to militancy and suicide attacks.
