Altaf Mahmud remembered on 44th death anniversary

On the occasion of the 44th death anniversary of martyred intellectual and composer Altaf Mahmud, Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Foundation organised a commemorative programme followed by award giving ceremony on Sunday at the Liberation War Museum. ‘Shaheed Altaf Mahmud Padak 2015’ was handed over to the recipients in the programme. Hasan Azizul Huq and noted music director Alauddin Ali were bestowed with the prestigious award this year for their outstanding contributions to literature and music respectively.
Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor attended the award giving ceremony as chief guest, while veteran filmmaker Syed Salahuddin Zaki, thespian Nasiruddin Yousuff, recitation artiste Hasan Arif and singer Fakir Alamgir  were present as special guests. Each of the award recipients received a crest, uttorio and an amount of ten thousand taka.
Hasan Azizul Haque, a former teacher at the philosophy department at Rajshahi University, is known to all for his  experimentations with the language and introducing modern idioms in his writings including ‘’Sumuidrer Swapno Shiter Aranya’,’ Atmaja O Ekti Karobi Gachh’, ‘Patale Haspatale’, ‘Ma Meyer Songsar’, ‘Brittayan’, and ‘Agun Pakhi’. He received most of the major literary awards of Bangladesh including the Bangla Academy Award and Alokto Sahitya Puroshkar.
Alauddin Ali, on the other hand, is a music composer, director, and lyricist. His unique skill of fusing classical and folk music like ‘O Amar Bangla Ma Tor’, ‘Shurjodoy-e Tumi’, ‘Prothom Bangladesh Amar Shesh Bangladesh’, ‘Achhen Amar Mokhtar’, ‘Hai-re Kopal Mondo’, ‘Keu Konodin Amar-e to’, ‘Ei Dunia Ekhon To Aar Shei Dunia Nai’ and more, made him popular to the music scene in the country.
In the programme, there was also a discussion on the life and work of Altaf, who earned huge popularity for his iconic song of ‘Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano Ekushey February’.
Altaf Mahmud (December 23, 1933– September, 1971) was a musician, cultural activist and martyred freedom fighter of the Bangladesh Liberation War. During a combing operation (on August 30, 971) in Dhaka by the Pakistan army, Mahmud was arrested and believed to have been killed in September of that year. l
