UNB

COMILLA: Most parts of the Comilla-Chandpur regional highway is in very bad shape, leading to immense sufferings for thousands of passengers who travel on this road every day, reports UNB. Normally it used to take two hours for commuters to travel the 70-kilometer road stretch, but nowadays it takes longer than four hours. Dilapidated road condition causes damage and breaking down of numerous vehicles on this regional highway.

Moreover, accidents are occurring very often due to the sorry state of the road. According to the Roads and Highways Department, 55 kilometers of the highway fall in Chandpur district while the rest 25 kilometers stretch in Comilla.

People from Chandpur, Laxmipur, Raipur, Ramganj, Shariatpur use this route to travel to Comilla, Dhaka, Gazipur, Chittagong, Sylhet, Srimangal, the hill districts, Feni and Noakhali, among others.

From Comilla’s Jangalia to Chandpur, there are over a hundred potholes in the road. In particular, the road conditions are worst in some of the places including Comilla Padua Bazar, Padua Market Hazari Filling Station Area, Lalmai, Magbari, Bijra, Muddafarganj Bazar, Jagatpur, Uwaruk and some parts of Hajiganj, Bakila, Mahamaya, Wireless Bazar, Sholaghar etc.

Kamal Hossain, a bus driver from Comilla, said that although this road has long been in a bad shape, no permanent initiative was taken yet to improve the road condition.

Vehicles including private cars very often got stuck on big potholes, he said.

“Students of this route can’t reach their respective institutes on time due to bad road conditions,” Jamal Uddin, a college teacher from Comilla, told UNB.

Comilla District Bus Owners Association President Abdul Haque said that the road was not renovated for a long time. “Not any private taxi or rent-a-car runs on this road in fear of damage.”

Subrata Dutta, executive engineer of Roads and Highways Department in Chandpur said that the renovation works of 55km area in Chandpur have been started.

“Hopefully, the repairing works will be ended within June,” he told this correspondent.

Comilla Roads and Highways Department Executive Engineer Mofazzal Haider said repair and widening works of the road in Comilla part has already begun. Hopefully peoples’ sufferings will end soon, he assured.
