Fish worth Tk 2.7cr washed away in Gaibandha

A huge amount of fishes worth over Taka 2.7 crore of 3,100 ponds here have been washed away due to the current flood caused by heavy rainfall and onrush of hilly waters from the upstream, reports BSS from Gaibandha. Office sources said a total of 32,062-pond of all the seven upazilas in the district were brought under fish farming during the current year to meet the demand of protein and help change their socioeconomic condition of the farmers. Fish fries and other technological support were being provided from the fisheries department to the farmers to make the fish culture a grand success to attain the cherished goal. Due to the inundation, carp fishes like Rui, Katla, Mrigel, Bata Musa and Mono Sex Telapia worth about Taka 2.7 crore had been washed away from the 3,100 ponds of the upazilas making the farmers worried. All the affected farmers are in trouble and anxiety and their hopes and aspirations had been nipped due to the disaster causing they are facing a huge amount of losses economically. Masud Rana, a fish farmer of Rambhadra area under Sarbananda union of Sundarganj upazila, said fishes of different species worth over Taka 10 lakh had been washed away from his pond during the current flood. The farmers who were engaged in fish farming taking loan from the commercial banks are in miserable condition as they will not be enabled to pay loan, he also said. Abdul Latif, district fisheries officer, said the amount of losses in the fisheries sector due to flood might be increased and for this, most of the farmers had been affected economically seriously.
