Monsoon flood caused by incessant rainfall has affected life of several lakh people across the country as it has damaged crops on vast tract of land, houses and infrastructures, local and official sources said, reports BSS.
According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), in the next 48 hours, the overall flood situation in different places of the districts of North, central and North-Eastern part of the country may deteriorate. Water levels in 53 river stations monitored by Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) have marked rises and 30 stations recorded falls. Among the 84 monitored water level stations, 20 are above danger level, it added. In Jamalpur, flood situation has remained unchanged in the district as water level at the river Jamuna has increased slightly. During the last 24 hours, the Jamuna rose by 4cm at Bahadurabad Ghat and it was flowing below the danger level by 8cm, the Water Development Board sources said.
Riverbank erosion has taken place in different areas at Islampur upazila along the Jamuna river, they added. Flood waters damaged 57km earthen road completely and 277km road partially, 17km carpeted road, one culvert and 3km of embankment partially. Flood also damaged 1,056 houses and 17 educational institutions. Nearly 1.5 lakh people of Islampur, Dewanganj, Bakshiganj, Madarganj, Melandah, Sadar and Sarishabari upazilas were affected by the floods.
In Thakurgaon, monsoon rain caused flooding in the district inundating low lying areas in the past 24 hours, official told the news agency. Flood damaged several hundreds of houses, standing crops on vast tract of land displacing people compelling them to take shelters on highland. Along with crop land, the severe flood damaged business establishments, the local people added. In Gaibandha, massive flooding in the district damaged houses, crops, destroyed embankments and different other infrastructures. A total of 48 unions of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari, Shaghata, Palashbari and Gobindaganj upazilas in the district have been affected by flood making about 1,50,000 people marooned . Flood control embankments of BWDB collapsed at different points including South Sahbaz in Sundarganj upazila, Cherenga in Palashbari upazila and Balua and Raghunathpur in Feteullapur under Gobindaganj upazila in the last few days inundating fresh areas of the district.
