SC scraps HC order acquitting Hazari
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday scrapped a High Court verdict acquitting former Awami League lawmaker Joynal Hazari in a case filed for amassing wealth illegally.
The apex court also ordered the High Court to conduct fresh hearing in the case filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC).
After disposing of a leave-to-appeal filed by the ACC, a four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha passed the order.
Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan, counsel for the ACC, told reporters that the Appellate Division has cancelled the HC verdict acquitting Joynal Hazari in a case filed for amassing wealth illegally.
The apex court ordered the HC to hold a fresh hearing on the appeal filed by Hazari against the trial courts verdict that had sentenced him to 10 years in prison along with a fine of Tk 500,000.
On October 2, 2007, ACC deputy director of Comilla M Safiqur Rahman filed the case against Hazari and his sister Khodeza with Feni Sadar Police Station on charge of acquiring wealth worth Tk 11.33 million beyond known sources of his income.
The case statement also said Hazari had a fixed deposit of Tk 10 million at a bank in his sisters name.
