SC extend Fakhrul�s bail by six weeks
The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court yesterday extended by another six weeks its bail order granted to BNP Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in three separate arson and vandalism cases.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinaha passed the order following a petition filed by Fakhruls lawyers seeking extension of his bail referring to doctors prescription issued in the USA.
The apex court also asked Fakhrul to surrender before the trial court after expiration of the bail.
On July 13, the apex court granted bail for six weeks to Fakhrul, who is now in USA for medial treatment, in three vandalism and arson attack cases.
The apex court granted him bail following a medical board recommendation, by five specialist doctors of the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, that the patient should go to an advanced centre where intervention for carotid lesions may be possible.
The Dhaka Central Jail authorities, on July 14, released Fakhrul after they had received the Supreme Courts bail order.
He went to Singapore on July 26 for treatment. Later, on August 10, the BNP leader went to the USA for better medical treatment.
Of the three arson and vandalism cases where Fakhrul was made an accused, two were filed with the Paltan Police Station on December 28 last year and January 4 this year. The other was lodged with Motijheel Police Station on January 6.
The BNP leader was detained from the Jatiya Press Club premises on January 6, and later he was shown arrested in seven cases.
