The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) will arrange the repatriation of 15 out of 54 Bangladeshis, rescued from the sea in Libya after their boats were capsized on Thursday.
A total of 78 Bangladeshis were on board the two boats. Some 24 died and the remaining 54 were rescued. Of them 29 males were kept in a detention centre while 25 females and children are in the custody of Bangladesh embassy in Libya.
“The Libyan chapter of the IOM has agreed to repatriate 15 Bangladeshis from Libya,” Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Libya Major General Shahidul Haque, now in Dhaka, told The Independent yesterday.
Asked about the timing of the return of the Bangladeshis, he said, “It depends on the availability of suitable flights to Bangladesh. It may take from two days to 10 days.” To another question, he added, “The IOM will bear the expenditure of the repatriation for the Bangladeshis.”
The ambassador also informed that 29 Bangladeshi males, who are now in detention centre, are expected to be brought under the custody of Bangladesh embassy in Tripoli by yesterday (Monday).
“As we speak, officials of our embassy are talking with the Libyan immigration department in this regard,” he said.
