The central committee of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has relieved three leaders of its Shahjalal University of Science & Technology (SUST) unit of duties for their alleged involvement in Sunday’s attack on some teachers on the university campus. The three leaders who have been relieved of their duties are SUST unit BCL senior vice-president Abu Sayeed Akand and vice-president Anjan Roy, and joint secretary Sajedul Islam. The three have also been served a notice to explain why they should not be expelled from the organisation permanently. BCL central president Saifur Rahman Sohag said the decision was taken late yesterday and that the move comes after they received complaints that these three leaders were involved in attacking the teachers at the SUST.
Meanwhile, the SUST authorities yesterday formed a three-member committee to probe into the attack on the teachers allegedly by the BCL activists, adds UNB. SUST vice chancellor Prof Dr Aminul Haque Bhuiya said a three-member committee headed by Dean of Physical Science Department Prof Dr Sabina Islam has been formed to investigate the incident.
A section of pro-liberation teachers, meanwhile, observed a three-hour work abstention yesterday protesting the attack.
Campus sources said the pro-liberation teachers’ forum under the banner of ‘Mohan Muktijuddher Chetonay Udbuddho Shikkhak Parishad’ brought out a rally wearing black badges from Teachers’ Canteen around 10:45am. Later, they held a protest meeting in front of VC’s building demanding investigation into the incident and punishment of the attackers.
Ten teachers of the university were assaulted allegedly by leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in front of the vice chancellor’s office on Sunday morning. The teachers had been on a movement demanding the removal of VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan.   However, the university unit BCL denied the allegation of attacking the teachers.
