Flood situation likely to worsen again in 2 days

Muhuri, Sangu, Matamuhuri may cause flooding due to heavy rain up, down streams
Special Correspondent

Major rivers, particularly the Brahmaputra and the Teesta, are in spate, affecting people in low-lying areas in the northern districts of Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Sirajganj and Bogra, reports said yesterday (Monday).
The overall flood situation in the northern, central and north-eastern parts of the country may worsen in the next 48 hours, following heavy rain both in upstream and the downstream regions. Rain-fed rivers like the Surma, Kushiyara and the Khowai could spell danger, Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC)  sources said.
Amirul Hossain, executive engineer in-charge of the FFWC, told The Independent yesterday that due to onrush of water down the hills, the flood situation in the north-eastern districts like Sunamganj, Netrokona, Sherpur and parts of Jamalpur and Kurigram and Nilphamari may worsen in the next couple of days.
He said rivers in the south-eastern region, like the Muhuri in Parshuram of Feni and the Sangu and Matamuhuri in Bandarban, may also cause flash flooding due to heavy rain up and down streams. These rivers originate in the hills across the border.
In its forecast, the FFWC said yesterday that the Brahmaputra was rising and the Jamuna at its downstream was steady. The river system is likely to rise in the next 72 hours.
The Ganges and the Padma are falling and will continue to do so in the next 48 hours, the FFWC said.
The Teesta rolled over 35 villages in seven unions of Hatibandha upazila of Lamonirhat district following heavy rain upstream, leaving the river flowing 32cm above its red mark yesterday.
This increased the woes of people living along its banks facing flash floods again since August 9, reports our correspondent.
In Nilphamari, our correspondent there reports that the Teesta in spate forced many in Dimla upazila and low-lying areas and charlands to take shelter again on higher grounds and watch in horror aman fields and vegetable patches go under water.
Rivers along the capital, like the Buriganga, Shitalakhya, Balu, Turag and the Tongi Khal may continue to rise in the next 72 due to rise in major rivers.
