Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) President Mahbubul Alam yesterday sought urgent measures for addressing water congestion in Chaktai-Khatunganj, one of the largest wholesale commodity markets of the country.
The CCCI president made the request through dispatching an urgent letter to Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud.
In the letter Mahbubul Alam mentioned that the commodity hub went under waist-deep water due to the recent incessant heavy downpour and tidal surge.
“The traders of the wholesale market are facing untold sufferings due to the inundation. The daily transaction in the market has gone down to a great extent. Moreover, perishable commodity items stored in the warehouses are being damaged by the rainwater. The once vibrant commodity hub is now on the verge of being a barren place,” Mahbub pointed out in the letter.
“The water congestion is having an adverse impact on the trade and commerce of the wholesale market and the traders are now ruined. It will also deal a severe blow to the revenue collection if the perennial water-logging problem is not addressed on an urgent basis,” added the CCCI president.
The CCCI president urged the Water Resources Minister to pay a field visit and recommended constructing sluice gates and excavating Chaktai Canal for ridding the traders of the persistent water congestion problem.
As per the association, the daily turnover in the wholesale market stands at Tk 1200- Tk1500 crore and there are about three thousand businesses in the wholesale market.
