Jute growers in Tangail district are happy as they are getting expected prices of the fibre in the local markets this year.
Favourable weather has boosted the production of jute; and adequate rainfall has helped rotting of the reed-like plants this year.
Md. Abul Hashem, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension [DAE] in Tangail, said 19,974 hectares of land was brought under jute farming in the current season, up from 19466 hectares last year.
Anwar Hossain, Agriculture Officer of Tangail Upazila, said after harvesting BRRI-28 and hybrid paddy, farmers immediately sowed jute seeds. “The weather was favorable. So, the farmers got good harvest. Due to adequate rainfall rotting has become easier also,” he said.
He, however, said the farmers, who often face crisis of water, are reluctant to adapt to ribbon retting process for rotting the raw jute. The farmers have been given training to use the technique of jute rotting, he added. Jute farmers Rukunuz-zaman, Abdul Halim, of village Niamotpur, Waijkurni of village Mahmudpur, Abdul jalil of village Polosia, Sohel Rana of village Bhadurirchar under Gopalpur Upazila said they have been asked agriculture officers to adopt the ribbon retting system. The system helps them get quality jute fibre.
Abul Hashem Deputy Director of DAE said the growers of the district will be provided with every support to grow more jute applying scientific method and bring back the past glory of jute.
Sources at local jute markets said one mound of Deshi variety of jute is being sold at Tk1800-Tk2000 against Tk800-Tk1000 last year. One mound of Tossa variety is selling at Tk2200-Tk2500 compared with Tk1000-Tk1400 last year.
“I have harvested only 18 maunds of jute fiber from two bighas of land this year compared with 25 maunds grown on the same land,” said grower Abdul Halim of Niamotpur village in Goplapur upazila. He, however, said he has earned more money this year because of good prices. He has received Tk 35,000 from sale of 18 maunds this year against Tk 20,000 from 25 maunds last year.
Jute trader Abdul Kader Bepari said that jute price increased due to rise in its demand.
