Heavy rain and onrush of water from upstream triggered fresh flash floods in 35 villages of Hatibandha upazila in the district from Sunday night.
About nine thousand people were affected due to fresh flood. T-Aman field in many areas inundated. Project implementation Officer (PIO) of Hatibandha said incessant rainfall from last 24 hours inundated many new areas of the upazila. Water level in Teesta River is increasing. Yesterday morning it was flowing 32 cm above danger level and at evening it came down to 20 cm.
When contacted the officials of Teesta barrage project said the river bed of Teesta has increased abnormally due to accumulation of huge silt. Only a week ago the people of the areas experienced a flash flood. Nearly 10,000 people were affected and crops on huge acreage of land has damaged by the flood water. Water lodging in many areas hampered normal life. Pradip Kumar an official of a non government organization who working in the area for long said flash flood has become a major problem to the inhabitants of Teesta River basin areas of the district.
Accumulation of silt has made the river dead causing it to lose the depth. He urged the concern authority to take a long term plan for dredging the river to protect the people and crops.
