Canals being re-excavated

Projects aim at increasing the surface water resources

Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA) is re-excavating canals under its ‘Integrated Agriculture Development project’ and ‘Rain water conservation project phase-3’ in Joypurhat.
The projects aim at increasing the surface water resources with proper retention and conservation of rainwater through re-excavating the existing derelict ponds and canals.
Sources said the water holding capacity has now increased in canals with construction of submerged weirs benefiting thousands of farmers directly.
They are now fishing there, which was impossible in the past. About 12,000 farmers are now using surface water from 30 km of re-excavated canals for irrigating Aman paddy without spending money.
In, fiscal 2014-15, the BMDA re-excavated the 2.2-km of Ramsala canal in Akkelpur upazila facilitating irrigation of crops on about 500 hectares of land.  Over the past three years, the BMDA re-excavated 8-km of the I5-km long Kodal Kata canal in Joypurhat sadar, about 15 km of 19 km-long Haramoti canal in Kalai and Khetlal upazilas and about 4-km of 6-km Ramsala canal in Akkelpur upazila under the project. About 7,000 hectares of land have been brought under surface water irrigation facility benefiting more than 10,000 farmers.
However, in 2014-15, the BMDA planted about 130,000 saplings of various fruit-bearing and medicinal plants on the banks of the re-excavated canals aiming to develop ecological balance in the region.
However, some 50 kms of derelict canals in Joypurhat have not been covered by the present re-excavation programme.
The beneficiary farmers of Zitarpur village in Joypurhat sadar uapzila, Aslam Hossain, Ranjit Kumar of kanupru in Akkelpur upazila, Khademul Islam of Hatshohor in Khetlal upazila, Asraful Islam of Boiragihat village in Kalai
upazila said they have been immensely benefited from using the surface water of the re-excavated canals for irrigation and fish culture.
Now, the crops are not submerged by water logging. The excess water is drained out through the canals, they said.
Chairman of Tilakpur union parishad Azhar Ali Bulu and chairman of Sonamukhi UP Akkelpur upazila Solayman ali said the BMDA re-excavated five kilometers of Ramshala canal and planted a large number of trees on its bank, which are contributing to economic and ecological development of the area.
Executive engineer of BMDA Joypurhat region Harun-ur-Roshid said the re-excavation of canals will boost food production and the tree plantation programme will help maintain ecological balance.
