AL plans to appoint 12 lakh polling agents

Ruling Awami League high-ups have directed their grassroots level leaders to complete the formation of polling centre-based committees across the country ahead of the next general elections scheduled to be held in the yearend. Apart from this, the party also plans to appoint nearly 12 lakh leaders and workers as polling agents based on polling stations across the country soon. They will be given proper training from the central leadership ahead of the next polls, say insiders.   

“Yes, the party is going to appoint its 12 lakh leaders and workers across the country as the polling agents of Nouka (boat, the electoral symbol of the AL) from the first week of March,” said Riyazul Kabir Kawser, AL central committee member who also works with the AL Election Steering Committee.

However, about the polling centre-based committees, AL insiders said the main task of these committees would be to oversee the overall activities during the voting hours of the next general elections and inform the central leaders about the latest situation in the polls. Apart from this these committees, members will guard polling stations along with law enforcers during the voting.

They said that each committee would consist of leaders and activists of AL and its associate bodies, while the central leaders would supervise their activities.

Alliance leaders of the Awami League and civil society members and professionals who believe in the spirit of the Liberation War and secularism, would be inducted into the committees.

The size of each committee would depend on the number of voters in each polling centre. The committee will select polling agents ahead of the next polls and their names will be sent to the central leadership. The party centre will train them for election work.

Talking on the issue with this correspondent at the party’s Dhanmondi office, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said they had already directed district leaders to form committees based on polling stations across the country as part of the preparation for the next polls. When contacted AL organizing secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapan said, they have already conveyed the directives of the party high-ups to the grassroots on the formation of such committees ahead of the next polls.

“We will form polling centre-based committees across the country and these tasks will be completed soon,” he said.

The grassroots leaders said they had already started forming polling centre-based committees as per the directives of the central leaders. The district leaders said they had already received letter from the centre directing the formation of such bodies.

Talking to this correspondent, Gazipur city unit AL president advocate Ajmotullah Khan said he had already completed forming some 398 committees, based on the polling stations of his Gazipur city.

 “We will form 15 more committees by April and submit the details to the central leaders,” he said. He said representatives of each village and locality would be inducted into these committees.  Mohibur Rahman Mojnu, the general secretary of Bogra district unit Awami League, said they would complete forming the polling centre-based committees by March.  “We got the party directives last week. Now, we are working to form the committees,” he added.
