Strike of the Barisal City Corporation (BCC) employees entered eighth-day yesterday demanding arrears salaries and benefits. All activities of BCC office came to a standstill due to continuous strike. Although some urgent and necessary services including sweeping, clearing the dustbins are going on, but other necessary services have been disrupted, said Enayet Hossain Chowdhury, secretary of Nagorik Parishad.
Dipak Lal Mridha, conservancy officer of BCC and leader of the employees association, said they will continue strike until their demands are not met.
Last year BCC mayor signed a memorandum with the employees to ensure regular payment of salaries and provident funds, but he failed to ensure commitment.
Current mayor took charges from previous Mayor with both assets and liabilities, so he cannot avoid the arrear dues of five hundred regular and over fifteen hundred master-role employees, Mridha added.
Mentionable that about 2,100 officials, regular and irregular employees and cleaners of of the BCC started work stoppage programme from February 20 demanding arrears of 6 months. They also held a demonstration in support of their demand.
They, however, observed three hours work stoppage programme earlier but started full day programme from Febraury 20. All the doors of the office were locked. City dwellers have been facing problems due to the programme.
