RANGPUR: Former Mayor of Rangpur Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu died at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital in the capital yesterday, reports BSS. He was 66. He left behind his wife, only son and a host of relatives and admirers to mourn his death. In his long political career, Sarfuddin Ahmed Jhantu was first elected as Rangpur Sadar Upazila Chairman in 1987 and worked in the post till 1991.
Later, he was elected as mayor of the defunct Rangpur pourasabha in 1992. Taking part in the parliament elections with Jatiya Party ticket, Jhantu was elected Member of the Parliament (MP) from Rangpur-1 constituency in 1996. Later, Jhantu was elected as the maiden Mayor of Rangpur city in 2012.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina expressed deep shock at the death of Jhantu. In a condolence message, the Prime Minister recalled with profound respect the contribution of Jhantu to the development of Rangpur city.
