The government has started to realign the field administration ahead of the country’s national polls likely to be held in December this year. As part of the move, the public administration ministry yesterday posted 22 deputy secretary-level officials to 22 districts as deputy commissioners (DCs). The DCs usually act as the returning officer of his/her respective district during the national election. The ministry is also planning to place senior bureaucrats to some key posts in the field like the post of divisional commissioners soon, government sources said.
Sources in the Public Security Service Division of the home ministry said they are going to post 29 police officers to 29 districts as new superintendents of police (SPs) within a day or two. According to the sources, posting will also be made to mid-level and senior level positions in the police department in the metropolitan and divisional areas soon, keeping in mind the next national polls. A senior official of the public security division of the home ministry, on condition of anonymity, told The Independent that most of the SPs have completed two years tenure in the districts, and that’s why new SPs have to be posted in those areas.
“Yes, the new SPs would be posted in the districts ahead of the parliamentary polls,” he confirmed. “As per the rules, no SP can be withdrawn from his/her post within two years after the posting, unless the authorities concerned receive any credible complaint against the officer,” he added.
When contacted, a high official of the public administration ministry, however, told this correspondent that the posting of news DCs and other positions in the field administration is part of a routine activity.“We have posted new DCs in 22 districts as the job tenures of the previous officials in the districts were completed by serving two or more years,” he added. “We are hoping that the new DCs will conduct the upcoming national election as returning officers,” he added.
New DCs, deputy secretary-level officials, have been posted to the districts of Mymensingh, Jessore, Rangpur, Dhaka, Chandpur, Comilla, Bandarban, Netrakona, Satkhira, Shariatpur, Dinajpur, Chittagong, Sylhet, Thakurgaon, Rangamati, Cox’s Bazar, Jhenidah, Bhola, Kurigram, Narshingdi, Habiganj and Rajshahi. The public administration ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard yesterday.
