Robbery fear stalks char people in Faridpur

The anxiety over a gang of robbers on the loose is increasing every day for the inhabitants of char areas under Decreer char and North chanel unions of Faridpur Sadar upazila.

There is no police outpost in these areas, even though 50,000 people live in these places.

Members of nearly 11,000 have been passing sleepless nights as they worry about being robbed of their valuables anytime.

Sixteen families living in these areas were already robbed in January.

On January 24, a robbery was committed in the house of Siraj Sheikh in Pauldangi village under Decreer char union. “I was alone in the house. A gang of seven to eight robbers entered my house in the dead of night.

They were carrying sharp weapons. They looted gold ornaments, mobile phones and other valuables,” said Siraj.

Mintu fakir, another resident of Decreer char union, said: "We live in compelte panic because of the recent robberies.”

Decreer char union parishad (UP) chairman Sadequzzaman alias Milon Paul said: “Robberies are being committed in the char area every night. We can't identify the robbers. Some char people may be involved in the robberies.  The police should initiatives to identify the culprits.’

Mostaque Ahmed, chairman of the North Channel UP, said: “Policemen from Kotwali police station visited the char areas and assured us of setting up a police outpost in the area.”

Nazimuddin, officer in-charge (OC) of Kotwali police station, said: “A decision has been taken to set up a police outpost in the area to maintain the law and order situation."
