The construction work on a 64-feet bridge that started thirteen years ago on the Tarai River at Montani in frontier Dhubaura upazila is yet to be completed due to lack of funds. This has frustrated the people there, who have long cherished a bridge that would make their life easier. People from some 10 villages, including Montani, Darsha, Morajan, Jirakhali, Ghatiarpar, Horochandrapur, Taltola and Baoiguna, are is still suffering for want of a bridge over the Tarai. There are two primary schools, including one government primary school and two madrassas in the area.
The people on their own make a bamboo bridge in Montani area every year to cross the river, said local sources. According to the locals, they need Tk 10,000 to construct the bamboo bridge taking contribution from villagers, and they have been doing so for the past 20 years, said village people. Farmers of these villages produce a large quantity of various crops, including paddy and vegetables, but they do not get fair price of their produce due to poor communication. Pulak Das, an assistant teacher of Darsha-Montani Govt Primary School, said there are over 200 students in his school and most of them have to cross the bridge to attended classes every day. “We have contacted local administration and Zila Parishad authorities several times, but any step has yet been taken,” said Pulak.
Noor-e-Alam, chairman of Dhubaura union parishad, said the work on the bridge started in 2002, 13 years ago, funded by Mymensingh Zila Parishad. But after some initial work it has since been left incomplete.
Due to fund constraint, the work has remained suspended for long, said Mofiz Uddin Ahmed, sub-assistant engineer of Mymensingh Zila Parishad.
