Three frauds held with arms
Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested three members of a fraud gang with a foreign made pistol and three rounds of bullet from Hazirabagh area in the capital on Wednesday night.
The arrestees are Md Kawsar, 28, son of Md Salam Sarkar of Itakhola village under Daudkandi upazila of Comilla , Md Tafayel Islam Titu, 39, son of Md Shafullah of Chatosundor village of Chandpur and Rezaul Islam, 49, son of late Moazzem Hossain of Tupipara village under Sreepur Thana of Magura.
A patrol team of RAB arrested them while they were taking share of money which they got through fraudulence. The team also recovered Tk 9.67 lakh from their possession.
Stolen Shiva idol found in Ctg
Police recovered an around 150-year-old Shiva idol, which was stolen 15 months ago, from Uttarvurshi Mallikpara in Boalkhali upazila on in Chittagong Wednesday night.
On information, a team of police brought the statue to the police station from the house of Ashish Mallik, said Himangshu Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Boalkhali Police Station.
He said the idol was stolen from the Mahajanbari Shiva Temple under Akubdondi union of the upazila on November 13, 2016.
Ashish found the Shiva statue in an abandoned condition 15 days ago and took it to his house, the OC said.
‘Missing’ officer found after 2 days
The Health and Family Planning Officer of Boalkhali Health Complex, who reportedly went missing on Monday, was found on Wednesday at AK Khan intersection of Chittagong city.
Officer-in-charge of Boalkhali Police Station Himagshu Kumar Das said they took Dr Ratan Dey to the police station after a bus dropped him at the intersection around 9am.
Victim's wife Neli Dey said Dr Ratan left his house on Monday morning to attend a meeting at the civil surgeon's office. However, he remained traceless since then.
Neli filed a general diary with the police station in this regard on Monday night. Dr Ratan said he does not know where had been for the last two days.
South Asian Photo Festival begins
The three-day South Asian Photo Festival-2018 kicked off in Rangpur on Wednesday on the eve of the 'Shaheed Dibash' and the International Mother Language Day-2018.
Rangpur Photographic Society (RPS) in association with Rangpur Photo Journalists' Association (RPJA) organised the festival in Rangpur Public Library auditorium dedicating to the language movement martyrs.
Some 100 still photos of Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Thailand and Sri Lanka are being exhibited. Venue is open to all from 10 am to 8 pm everyday and the festival will continue till February 23 (Friday).
Rangpur Divisional Commissioner (Additional Secretary) Kazi Hassan Ahmed formally inaugurated the photo festival as the chief guest.
JS body on science and technology ministry meets
Meeting of parliamentary standing committee on Ministry of Science and Technology was held yesterday at Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Bhaban with Dr AFM Ruhul Haque in the chair.
Science and Technology Minister Architect Yeafesh Osman, Imran Ahmed, Mohammad Aman Ullah and Hajera Khatun, attended the meeting, among others.
The meeting discussed in detail Bangladesh Science Industry and Research Council (amendment) Act, 2018. The JS body also proposed to raise the bill at the parliament after necessary amendment, addition, correction and refinement. Senior officials of Ministry of Science and Technology and parliament secretariat were present at the meeting, among others.
2 women held with 8 gold bars
Customs intelligence officials arrested two female domestic passengers along with eight gold bars weighing around 795 grams at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Tuesday afternoon.
The arrestees are Dalia Khanam and Afroza Khanam.
Sources at the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) said the two female passengers boarded a Regent Airways flight from Chittagong when it landed at Shah Amanat International Airport from Bangkok en route to Dhaka in the afternoon. Based on secret information, a CIID team challenged the two women at the arrival point after the flight landed at the Dhaka airport around 5:30 pm, said Dr Moinul Khan, CIID Director General.
