A total of five enterprises provided the required pay-order and bank guarantee worth Tk. 5.50 crore in their bid to acquire a team in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).
Three new companies—Beximco Limited, Axiom Technologies and DBL group and two old franchisees- Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Royals are among the 13 enterprises to come up before the deadline of submitting expression of interest to buy a BPL team. The submitting date of pay-order and bank guarantee ended yesterday.
The other eight companies which submitted the Expression of Interest (EOI) were BBS Cables, Blues Communication, Fiber@Home Limited, Index Group, Mediacom (Sqaure), Sohana Group, Bengal Comminuciations and Netowlrd BD Limited.
Considering the Bangladesh cricket team’s performance, the response from the corporate houses are not encouraging but the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is still hopeful that some more companies would turn up despite the deadline expired.
“As of now, five companies made a positive response, clearing the bank guarantee and pay-order and some more companies are in discussion with us,” said BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury.
“We will not consider it as disappointment. We had target in seven but we got five. As we have some more time in our hand we’ll see and take the final decision about the tournament.”
“The five companies which met up the requirements are- Dhaka Dynamites (BEXIMCO), Eye Sports Limited (Rangpur), Axiom Technologies, DBL Group and Royal Sporting Limited (Sylhet). Sylhet however showed their interest about Comilla.”
But the question raised whether the matter of BPL is in progress like the previous two editions when BCB time and time again open the gate for the franchisees to have a negotiation. As the BCB expected some more companies to come up later, question also raised whether the ‘deadline’ matter is just a eyewash.
“Actually they want to be with us. They want to know how they would pay the pay-order and ban guarantee as the deadline is expired,” Nizamuddin said.
“Actually the rest of the aspirant enterprises are trying to understand the whole financial module and tournament. For this they are taking some more times. Those who meanwhile applied to be part with BPL are fully aware of the entire matter. I think, they are working more on it,” the CEO added.
“The concept paper, made by BPL governing body, was a commercial venture as a whole. They had applied by it. Those who had applied most of them are big business group. They will prioritise the commercial aspect. But we will look after both commercial and development of cricket.”
“In the next time, the meetings of BPL governing council and BCB will be held. Hopefully the matter will be settled in that meeting.”
The BCB CEO doesn’t agree with the idea that they are giving the corporate houses an advantage despite they didn’t meet the deadline.
“Actually it is not a matter of concession. You all have to understand that the board is mulling to make the tournament successful. In that sense, we’re progressing at slow pace. The meet will be held in November. We have some more times in hands. We will organize a successful tournament if we move in this way.”
About the possibility of old franchises, the CEO said, “Many enterprises expressed their interest to us. That might be new and old. If they have any specific reason and if the board receives then they have chances to be franchisee for the BPL-3.”
