A discussion on life and works of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was held marking his 39th death anniversary in the city on Saturday night. To mark the day, Nazrul Sangeet Shilpi Parishad (NSSP), Barisal unit organised discussion and cultural programme at Aswini Kumar Town hall in the city. Chairman of Barisal Education Board Md Ziaul Haque inaugurated the programme while lawmaker Jebunnesa Afroz addressed the programme as chief guest. The programme was presided over by Barisal unit NSSP president Nurul Amin Chowdury and addressed by special guest principal of Government BM College Emanul Hakin, secretary of BSSP Barisal unit Zahurul Hasan Shohel and Kazal Ghos, among other. The speakers said Nazrul’s songs and poems became a great source of inspiration and motivation for the freedom fighters during the Liberation War in 1971 to establish a sovereign country free from all sorts of oppressions and discriminations. They said that Nazrul had been vocal against prejudice, oppression and social injustice all his life. He was a poet of humanity, youth and rebellion, enriched the Bangla language and literature through his literary works.
Nazrul as one of the undisputed central figures in the Bangla literature gave the literature a new dimension through his creation, the speakers observed. Later, a cultural function was held on the occasion.
