We should hang ourselves, says Zafar Iqbal

Distraught at the assault on some teachers of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) allegedly by BCL boys, popular science fiction writer Prof M Zafar Iqbal yesterday said teachers should hang themselves now, reports UNB from Sylhet.
“People had joined the Liberation War in 1971 with the slogan ‘Joy Bangla’, today (Sunday) Bangladesh Chhtra League (BCL) men attacked the teachers chanting the same slogan. It’s a shame. We should hang ourselves but we can’t do it,” he said.
He also said, “Though I’m not directly involved in the movement of the young teachers demanding the removal of SUST VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, I do support it.”
The attack on the teachers by the BCL men in the presence of law enforcers is not acceptable, Jafar bemoaned.

Seven SUST teachers were assaulted allegedly by leaders and activists of the university unit BCL in front of the vice-chancellor’s office in the morning.
When the teachers were going to join a sit-in programme in front of the Administrative Building around 8:30am demanding removal of VC Prof Aminul Haque Bhuiyan, a group of BCL leaders and activists attacked them on the campus and assaulted them.
The victims are Prof Dr Yasmeen Haque, wife of Prof Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal, Prof Mohammad Yunus, former president of SUST Teachers’ Association, association’s incumbent general secretary Prof Abdul Goni, Prof ANK Samaddar, Prof Sayed Shamsul Islam, Associate Prof Faruque Uddin and Mostafa Kamal Masud.
