Electricity supply to the southern part of Chittagong was stopped after a fire broke out at Shikalbaha thermal power plant in Patia at around 3:30pm yesterday.
The fire caught suddenly in two transformers of the plant. Due to the fire, production of electricity of the 60-megawatt plant was disrupted and consequently the power supply to southern Chittagong remained suspended,” said Moniruzzaman, senior assistant director of Bangladesh Power Development Board in Chittagong. Three units of fire fighters doused the flame at 6:35pm, after three hours of effort. However, eleven upazilas of southern Chittagong — Patiya, Anwara, Bhoalkhali, Chandanish, Satkania, Loahagara and Banskhali – remained out of power till filing of this report at 8pm yesterday.
PDB sources said it might take another four to five hours before power supply is restored to the southern part of Chittagong.
