Hundreds of teachers of public universities across the country simultaneously observed three-hour work abstention demanding separate pay scale for them. They also demanded for the cancellation of the proposed 8th national pay scale which they termed as discriminatory and announcement of separate pay scale. As par of their ongoing movement, the teachers observed the abstention from 10am to 1pm. However, the exams were out of the purview of the programme. However, the teachers said they would hold a joint meeting of the federation on September 5 to declare fresh programmes as the government is not responding to their demands.
The teachers in movement said they were interested to resolve the crisis through discussion with the policymakers of the government but they are not getting importance of them. They said the teachers are observing such programme as the government did not take any effective steps or give any assurance to them in this regard. They said the movement would be tougher in future to realise their demand. The teachers said they are not launching the movement only for salary rather the movement is meant for opening the window of creating real manpower by institutionalising the education system that would ensure teachers accountability.
They said the teachers community never stepped back in discharging their duties in the past and will never do it in future. They hope that the current government under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina would reconsider the discriminatory pay scale and announce a logical pay scale and ensure proper dignity of them. BSS adds from Chittagong: The teachers of Chittagong University (CU) yesterday observed a three-hour work abstention protesting the proposed eighth pay scale. Chittagong University Teachers Association (CUTA) observed the work abstention starting from 10 am to 1 pm. However, examinations remained out of purview of the protest programme. CUTA president Dr Mohammad Abul Monsur and General Secretary Dr Kazi SM Khasrul Alam Kuddusi thanked the teachers for participating in the protest programme that has been continuing for more than three months. The CUTA leaders termed the pay scale discriminatory and sought intervention of the prime minister to press home their demands. Their other demands are same salary and allowance for senior [selection grade] professors as senior secretaries and same pay scale for professors and secretaries, ensuring university teachers status in accordance with their expected pay scale in the states warrant of precedence, provision of cars and other allowances for them like the bureaucrats.
