The declaration of a new Awami League (AL) Dhaka city unit committee has become uncertain due to the indifferent attitude of the high-ups of the city unit. This has created frustration among the party’s city leaders who are aspiring for positions in the new committee.
Party insiders allege that the current city committee’s acting president MA Aziz and general secretary Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya are responsible for this. They also allege that the two leaders are not paying attention to party president Sheikh Hasina's repeated urgings to set up a new committee and to induct dedicated and committed leaders for retaining their own posts.
The ruling high-ups have not yet announced the new committee even after two years and seven months of holding the triennial council session for the AL City Unit. The last council was held on December 27, 2012, nine years after its previous council which was held for the city committee on June 18, 2003 and accordingly the committee was declared on February 5, 2004.
Interestingly, even if the party forms the city committee now, it will have only five months to serve the city committee as per the party's charter. This has also raised questions among the party rank and files about the justification of the last council that was held only on seven days’ notice.
Talking to this correspondent, city unit joint general secretary Haji Mohamamd Selim said the AL city committee is not being declared because of the committee’s incumbent president and general secretary. He also described the present AL city committee as ‘illegal’ since the triennial council for the unit was held at least two years and seven months ago.
Expressing his frustration, the AL leader said, “Please publish a story in this regard. I don't know how long Maya and Aziz will hold their positions.”
When contacted, MA Aziz said the city committee would be declared soon. “We've already completed councils to the all the thanas, wards and unions. Now it's just a matter of time before the city committee is declared. We've also spoken to the Prime minister. in this regard and she will announce the committee in her convenient time,” he added.
He denied the allegation that their indifferent attitude is one of the main causes of not declaring the city committee.
Relief and disaster management affairs minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said declaration of the city committee depends on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
“No discussion about the city committee has been held yet in our party forum, as you know we're busy because of the month of mourning,” he told The Independent.
AL joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif said the city committee will be announced soon and that it will comprise senior and young leaders. "The city unit would be divided into two units in line with the bifurcation of the Dhaka City Corporation. Two separate committees for Dhaka North and Dhaka South.
