FBCCI President Abdul Matlub Ahmad said the trade body will work sincerely for reviving the traditional silk sector in Rajshahi.
He said, "We will work together to regain its lost glory as it has a big market in both domestic and global. We will find-out the existing problems and possibilities. We will see Bangladesh's original silk products in all the local markets near future".
The Federation of Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) president was addressing a day long seminar titled "Problems and Prospects of Silk and Other Industries in Rajshahi Division" held at the conference hall of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) yesterday.
Ahmad said utmost emphasis would be given on boosting more silk yarn along with promoting more silk export from the region for making its economy vibrant coupled with elevating its socio-economic condition through earning more foreign currencies.
The seminar was jointly organised by FBCCI and Newmann- Stifting Furdie Freihfit (FNF), Germany.
RCCI President Muniruzzaman presided over the seminar while FBCCI Vice President Mahbubul Alam, directors-Rejaul Karim, Nurul Alam and Probir Kumar, RCCI former presidents Muhammad Ali Sarker and Abu Bakkar Ali and president of Bangladesh Silk Industry Owners Association Liakat Ali also spoke.
Matlub Ahmad said the region has huge business potential but it has yet to be explored due to various reasons.
He further said there was no large industry in Rajshahi region. Even, the state run jute, textile and sugar mills in the region have long been incurring losses.
He further mentioned that there is potential for building industries on jute, sugar, textiles, iron and steel and also agro and food processing industries, leather, handicrafts, loom and cottage industries.
He also stressed the need for enhancing export items through establishing industries based on agricultural and non-agricultural products in the region by utilising government initiatives aimed at earning foreign currency. FBCCI will extend all-out support in this regard.
