Govt ‘embarrassed’ over unabated question fraud

The Awami League (AL)-led government finds itself in an embarrassing situation over the frequent question paper leaks, which seems to have become a common phenomenon. The education ministry has been taking measures to check question paper leak, but all its efforts have gone in vein. The ministry has been facing criticism from different quarters for the last few years. Educationalists and civil society members fear that systematic leaking of questions before examinations may destroy the education system.

Ruling party leaders and ministers say the unhealthy practice cannot be allowed to go on. AL leaders say they are worried over the current situation of education and will soon meet the party president and Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, to find a way to end the menace of question paper leak.

“We are worried. This should not be allowed to continue further. The issue is tarnishing the AL's image and we will soon meet party president Sheikh Hasina after she returns from Italy,” AL joint general secretary Abdur Rahman told The Independent on Thursday.

The prime minister will return this evening after wrapping up her four-day official visit to Italy and Vatican City.

When contacted, AL presidium member Pijush Kanti Bhattacharya said they are deeply concerned over the frequent question paper leaks. It is destroying the government’s development activities.

“We will meet our president to find a way to check question leak. Otherwise, our education system will be destroyed and our young generation will suffer in future,” he added.

The AL’s education and human resource affairs secretary, Shamsunnahar Chapam, said the Sheikh Hasina government is worried over question paper leak. "But I think the government will be able to find a permanent solution to the menace soon,” she added.

The leaking of question papers is not new in the country. On numerous occasions since independence, questions have been leaked.

But it has become a common phenomenon that questions are leaked prior to an exam. It is happening in PSC, JSC, SSC, and HSC exams and even in medical admission and job entry tests. A group of people manage to leak questions through political and financial connections.

Law enforcement agencies detained 23 people for their alleged involvement in leaking question papers of the Dhaka University admission test in 2017.

Secondary and Higher Education Division Secretary Sohrab Hossain said that the government is planning to introduce a new method of public exams from the next year to prevent widespread question leakage across the country. Talking to reporters at the Secretariat, Sohrab said: “All public exams will be held based on a new method from next year. We’re trying to formulate a method in which there’ll be no possibility of question paper leak.”
