5 youths return from India after serving jail
Five Bangladeshi youths returned home through Shahebnagar border in Rajshahi on Tuesday after serving several jail terms in an Indian prison.
Border Security Force (BSF) handed them over to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) through a flag meeting at noon, said Altaf Hossain, officer-in-charge of Godagari Model Police Station.
The returnees are Anarul, 35, son of Tabul Ali of Raninagar village in Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj district, Sultan, 33, son of Taibur Ali of Shahpara, Jahirul, 37, son of Yusuf Ali of Munnamara village of the upazila, Mursalin, 21, son of Aminul Islam of Kosaipara of Sadar upazila and Basona Mandal, wife of Jaydeb Mandal of Keraniganj upazila in Dhaka district.
Later, the BGB men handed them over to Godagari Model Police Station.
The returnees said they entered the Indian territory for construction work and they were held by Indian Police.
Two SSC examinees stabbed
A group of miscreants stabbed two Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinees at Dharmapashapar of Comilla city on Tuesday.
The victims are Imtiaz, a student of Comilla Zilla chool, and Pavel, a student of Modern High School.
Inspector Md Salahuddin of Kotwali Police Station said the unidentified miscreants swooped on the duo in the afternoon and stabbed them indiscriminately.
Of the injured, Imtiaz was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in the capital. However, the reason behind the incident could not be known.
BSMMU Pro VC Dr ASM Zakaria passes away
Prof Dr ASM Zakaria Swapan, Pro Vice-chancellor (Academic) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), died of prolonged illness at BSMMU yesterday.
He was 55, family sources said, adding he was suffering from liver cancer for long. Dr Zakaria left behind his wife, a son, a daughter and a host of relatives, colleagues, students and admirers to mourn his death. His first namaz-e-janaza was held at BSMMU central mosque at 3pm.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday expressed deep shock at the death of Prof ASM Zakaria Swapan.
In a condolence message, the premier prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.
In separate message, Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim also expressed deep shock at his death. They prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.
World Radio Day observed
The World Radio Day-2018 was observed in Rajshahi yesterday amid much enthusiasm and in a befitting manner.
Marking the day, officials and artists of Rajshahi Betar brought out a rally.
Representatives and staffs of Community Radio Padma and Mohananda also joined the rally. After parading different streets, the rally ended at Betar Bhaban where a discussion and a cultural function were held.
Fazley Hossain Badsha, MP, and Regional Director of Bangladesh Betar Towhida Chowdhury addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Hassan Akhter, Deputy Director of Betar, in the chair. Badsha said the community radio could be an important medium to disseminate information to grassroots level.
Dr Wazed’s birth anniversary on Friday
The 76th birth anniversary of internationally reputed nuclear scientist and Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina's husband Dr MA Wazed Miah will be celebrated in Rangpur tomorrow.
This renowned nuclear scientist, who has a colourful working life experience, was born on February 16, 1942 in a respectable Muslim family of Laldighee Fatehpur village under Pirganj upazila in the district.
He died on May 9, 2009.
Different organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to celebrate the 76th birth anniversary of Dr Wazed in a befitting manner.
