CJ urges HC judges to work honestly
He presides over first full court meet

Newly appointed Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain yesterday urged the judges of the High Court Division to work sincerely and with honesty in order to uphold the image and dignity of the judiciary.
The chief justices call comes within a week of Law Minister Anisul Huqs request urging the chief justice to initiate investigation into the allegation of irregularities brought by Attorney General Mahbubey Alam against some High Court (HC) judges and Supreme Court (SC) officials. The Law minister made the request to the chief justice on February 7, while the attorney general came up with his allegations on February 4 at a felicitation programme organised for the chief justice.
On that day, the chief law officer of the state, citing irregularities in the judicial and administrative functions of the SCs High Court Division, said the judiciary has seen degradation in the last few years and that the image of the HC has changed.
At the first full court meeting yesterday after assuming office, the chief justice mentioned the attorney generals comment and urged the judges to work with honesty and said that a discussion meeting would be arranged with all the Appellate Division and High Court Division judges to resolve the issue, meeting sources said.
The full court meeting, where all the judges of the High Court Division were present, approved a proposal for promotion of a total of 131 additional district judges to the post of district judges.
Among them, additional judge Arunav Chakraboti was cleared for a conditional promotion to the post of district judge as his judicial working experience is yet to fulfill the necessary pre-condition set for getting promoted.
After completion of one year judicial experience, he would get automatic promotion to the post of district judge, according to the meeting sources.
The meeting sources said that the full court meeting refused to approve the promotion of 21 other additional judges out of 151 over different issues.
The meet also approved the promotion of three joint district judges to the post of additional judges while it refused to promote one joint district judge to additional judge after finding some problems, meeting sources said.
The law ministry had sent the proposal for the promotion of additional district judges to the post of district judges and of joint district judges to the post of additional judges for its approval.
