EP resolution ‘highly likely’ next month

The European Parliament (EP) is highly likely to adopt a resolution in the next month with regards to the ongoing Rohingya crisis that is engulfing Bangladesh in a big way, said Jean Lambert, the chair of the parliament’s delegation for relations with countries in South Asia, yesterday.

Lambert was speaking at a press conference organised to brief journalists about the trip of four EP groups comprising about a dozen of members of EP (MEP) to Bangladesh.

She also said that the MEPs will also tell the EU countries’ foreign ministers, who will meet at the end of this month, about their (MEPs’) experiences and possible courses of action.

To a question, Lambert acknowledged that if the Rohingya crisis persists, Bangladesh might experience many other problems, including radicalisation and human trafficking.

She also said that if the past experience is any guide, there is a possibility that this problem could be protracted.

Lambert described the humanitarian tragedy as one of the most serious refugee crises in the world and reiterated the European Union’s support for the Rohingyas.

She said that the return should be voluntary

under international supervision after addressing all the issues, including the citizenship of the Rohingyas.

The delegation chair also said that they will do their best so that funding is ensured and that the issue keeps attracting international attention.

About putting pressure on Myanmar to take its people back, she talked about some measures including targeted sanctions.
