Two Bangladeshi films invited to Montreal Fest

Two Bangladeshi films, titled ‘Jalaler Golpo’ (Jalal’s Story) directed by Abu Shahed Emon and ‘Under Construction’ directed by Rubaiyat Hossain, have been invited to the prestigious Montreal International Film Festival (MIFF) in Canada. Both of the films will be screened at the 39th edition of MIFF in the Focus on World Cinema category.
Abu Shahed Emon’s directorial debut feature film ‘Jalaler Galpo’ will be screened on September 2 and 3 while Rubaiyat Hossain’s second film ‘Under Construction’ will be screened on September 4 and 5.
The story of the film shows that just as Moses, who was found in the river Nile, an infant by the name of Jalal, is rescued from a river, and adopted by Miraj, Karim and Sajib in turns over the years, only to be abandoned in the various stages of his life. From innocence to becoming a gangster, the unpredictable currents of Jalal’s journey prove that he is truly a child of the river. Told in three parts, Jalal’s Story chronicles the life a child by that name, as fate literally carries him down the river from one unwelcoming home to the next.
With the runtime of 121 minutes, the film stars Arafat Rahman, Mosharraf Karim and Mousumi Hamid. Earlier, Jalaler Golpo’ received best film, best actor awards in the 19th edition of the ‘Avanca International Film Festival’ in Portugal. Besides receiving the Asian Cinema Fund in the 19th Busan Film Festival in 2014, the film also enjoyed its world premiere in the main competition category named ‘New Current’ of the festival. In addition, the film was also screened as the only Bangladeshi film at the International Film Festival of India 2014’ (IFFI) in Goa, India.
On the other hand, the story of the film ‘Under Construction’ shows that struggling to find herself in the sprawl of urban Bangladesh, actress Roya reconstructs a famous and politically minded play for modern times, reclaiming her identity and sexuality in the process.
The film casts Shahana Goswami, Rikita Nandini, Mita Rahman, and Rahul Bose among others. The film was premiered at the Seattle Film Festival earlier this year. l
