A traditional boat race on the river Chitra was held yesterday in observance of 91st birth anniversary of painter SM Sultan. The programme was arranged jointly by SM Sultan Foundation and district administration in collaboration with Bangladesh Rowing Federation. At 2-30 pm, the boat race for women and at 3-30 pm the boat race for the men began. State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikdar inaugurated the race as chief guest. Three boats steered by women and nineteen boats by men took part in the competition in area spanning four nautical kilometers for three times. A large number of people irrespective of cast, creed, age and gender enjoyed the traditional boat race standing on both sides of the river Chitra ignoring heavy downpour. At the end of the competition, the prize giving ceremony was held with deputy commissioner of Narail Helal Mahmud Sharif in the chair. Police super Sardar Rakibul Islam, district council administrator Subas Chandra Bose, additional police super Menhazul Islam, deputy general secretary of Bangladeh Olympic Association and secretary of Sultan Foundation Ashikur Rahman Miku were present at the programme.
