Sri Lanka’s win, Bangladesh’s lesson

Sri Lanka’s win, Bangladesh’s lesson

Displaying magnificent composure, drive and self-belief, Sri Lanka cricket team has won the test series against Bangladesh, leaving the hosts to contemplate over their rather lackluster performance. Sri Lanka previously won the tri-nation tournament final though they lost at the group stage match to the Tigers.  We would like to congratulate the Lankan lions.

For Bangladesh team, which has proven itself capable of winning against any side in the world, this is a chastening experience since the wicket here was specifically made for spin balls, aimed at aiding our bowlers. In the past, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, India and others have struggled on this wicket, eventually losing matches. However, the Lankan lions have showed that they came prepared to play and win on such a wicket.  The loss has immediately raised questions about Tigers’ ability to sustain over the longer format of the game with some critics underlining a growing sense of complacency among players.

While it’s a bit disappointing to see our side tumble in front of pressure, it would not be right to aim all guns at the players because taking into consideration the performance of the last two years, supporters and cricket aficionados can only feel optimistic.  The recent losses, with the vital one in the tri-nation final against the Lankans, can actually be an eye-opener for us, providing premise for a new approach to ensure cricketers do not falter if they reach the final of any tournament. Let us not forget, Bangladesh has won several trophies before, with players displaying outstanding quality plus tenacity. No team in the world can consistently win with unlucky periods often coming as a blessing in disguise.

This recent loss indicates that other teams are preparing to face us on our home ground, perfecting our own strategy. In fact, Sri Lanka’s coach, who had been Bangladesh’s mentor for a long period, guiding us to become a winning side from a losing one, deserves kudos, because without his guidance, wins for the visitors would have been a tad difficult. The absence of a key player was cited by certain quarters for the defeat though it only appears to be an untenable excuse. In sports, it’s wise to keep in mind that dependence on a few individuals cannot ensure consistent performance.

While star players boost confidence, solid performance comes when a team plays as a whole. Win or loss is a different issue, what is important is giving a cohesive performance supported by a never say die spirit. Once again, marvelous show Sri Lanka; crucial lesson learnt for Bangladesh!
