Arambagh Krira Sangha lifted the title of the Walton Independence Cup football tournament with a stunning 2-0 victory over the defending champions Chittagong Abahani Limited in the final yesterday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
It was the first ever major title for Arambagh and obviously it was eye-catching victory when they eliminated the all giants on their way to final with thrashing league champions and runners-up Abahani Limited and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club by 3-0 and 1-0 respectively.
While Chittagong Abahani was the third placed in the league and were the last victim of Arambagh .
Arambagh, who were strugglers in the league and started the tournament as underdogs, gradually made a huge improvement to overwhelm all the title contenders to win the title.
Mohammed Arif and Rockey struck a piece in the first half when the former opened the net on 20th minute to lead and the latter doubled the margin right on 45th to confirm the victory of Arambagh KS.
In the fascinating clash Arambagh drew the first blood on 20th minute which was in fact the first real chance was produced in the match and also turned it into an excellent goal.
It was a counter move built up down the right side after Abu Sufian Shufil losing his control and Shahrear Bappy got the possession, who make a terrific cross that found Mohammed Jewel on right position, closer to the goal post slammed his header giving no chance to Ctg Abahani skipper and custodian Asharf Islam Rana on 20th (1-0).
Chittagong Abahani despite had the better dominance in the match, could not blow apart the five-men’s defense wall of Arambagh, as no real chance came to their way in the first half, though some of the set pieces were well taken by Mamunul Islam were cleared before to turn into danger.
Maruful Haque, the only UEFA A license holder coach operated his side with brilliant technique to overpower the stronger side with keeping the defense rock-hard went on swift counter attack when his tricks worked well to have the result.
However, Arambagh doubled the advantage, which came fully against the flow of the game and this time the attack initiated down the left when the young booters always ran faster than their opponents, entered into the danger area and Shahriar Bappy again made a cross inside the area.
The deep defender of Ctg Abahani Redwan looked shaky when he failed to clear the ordinary cross as onrushing Rockey just propelled his right footer into the near post on 45th (2-0).
