No respite in SSC question leaks

Maths question ‘leaked’; woman, parent among 4 held
Staff Reporter with our Correspondent, Rajshahi

The Mathematics question paper of the SSC examination held yesterday and its answers were found circulating on a number of social networking pages hours before the exam began. Law enforcers yesterday arrested at least six people including two women and a female student in connection with their suspected involvement in leaking the question paper. The arrests were made in Rajshahi, Thakurgaon, Sylhet and Jessore.

In Rajshahi, a college student was arrested on charge of possessing a leaked question paper of Mathematics. The arrestee, Rabia Islam Ria (21), daughter of Aminul Islam under Sonatoshpur area of the city, is a first year honours student of Rajshahi Government City College and a relative of an SSC examinee.

Aman Ullah, Officer-in-Charge (OC) at Boalia Model Police Station in Rajshahi, said Ria possessed a set of 30 multiple choice questions (MCQs) in her mobile which matched the original question set of yesterday’s Mathematics examination.

Ria was detained by other guardians as she was seen assisting three examinees near the PN Government Girls’ High School right before the beginning of the exam at 10am. She was later handed over to the police.

Meanwhile, the mother of an examinee was also arrested in the city as she attempted to solve a math problem that she received on her mobile before the exam center.

In Gazipur, Amzad Hossain, assistant secretary of Mauna Bohumukhi High School in Sreepur, was detained while he was taking the SSC question paper out of the exam centre, adds UNB.

In Thakurgaon, police held a school teacher and a bank official from near Jabarhat Hemchandra High School in Pirganj upazila. And in Sylhet, a young man was arrested from in front of the Ambarkhana Girls High School around 10am with the ‘leaked’ question paper.

The incidents follows the alleged leak of question papers of all the SSC exams held so far - Bangla I and II, English I and II, and Islam and Moral Studies.

After obtaining a question paper of Mathematics yesterday from such a platform, it was found to be identical to the original question paper.

Following the commencement of the SSC examination on February 01, widespread allegations were made over the question paper leak. Various quarters confirmed that the questions papers of all the exams held so far were leaked a couple of hours before the examinations started.

The education ministry, on February 04, announced a bounty of Tk 5 lakh for information on question paper leak, in a bid to prevent such occurrence.

Meanwhile, the acting Chairman of Dhaka Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board, Shahedul Kabir Chowdhury, yesterday said that those involved with SSC question paper leaks will be booked within days, according to UNB.

The acting chairman added that investigators have several developments in this regard and that those responsible will be booked in a couple of days.

However, Shadeul assured that the leaks were not hampering the candidates and the examination as those leaks were available for a shorter period of time right ahead of the exam schedules.

The government formed an 11-member monitoring committee to assess all the examinations. The committee is headed by the secretary of the technical and madrasa division, Md Alamgir, while it also includes representatives from the Cabinet Division, public administration ministry, home ministry, two members from the police department and three education board members.

Sohrab Hossain, secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, said if the committee finds any question leak incident, the examination will be cancelled and they shall arrange for re-examination based on the recommendation.
