A human chain programme of BNP in Chittagong to protest the price hike of essentials was foiled yesterday by the police.
Police officials claimed that the BNP did not obtain any permission for holding the human chain in the port city.
BNP Chittagong city unit organised the human chain on the Chittagong Press Club premises to protest the recent price hike of gas, electricity and other essential commodities.
BNP leader Mohammad Ali presided over the programme while city BNP Secretary Dr Shahadat Hossain addressed as chief guest. However, Shahadat could not conclude his speech as police put a stop to the programme. As BNP men got engaged in an altercation following obstruction by the police, members of the force also snatched away the banner of the programme.
During his brief speech, Dr Shahadat condemned the price hike of essential commodities including gas and electricity.
