Several witnesses have identified one of the four suspects detained by police as being physically present during the murder of blogger Niladri Chatterjee Niloy, police said.
While addressing a press conference at the Dhaka Metropolitan Police(DMP) Media Centre in the capital, Joint Commissioner (Detective Branch) Monirul Islam said that at least one witness saw the suspect at the spot.
“So far, we have arrested Masud Rana, Sad Al Nahian, Kamal Sarder and Kawser Khan in connection with the killing. Several witnesses saw Nahian, nephew of State Minister for Labour and Employment Mujibul Haque Chunnu, putting a sharp weapon inside his bag, and later he left the place on a waiting CNG 3-wheeler,” he said.
However, the DB official refused to disclose the names of the witnesses over security concerns.
Regarding the progress of the investigation, the top DB official said, “We have taken decision to conduct DNA tests of the three other arrestees to check whether their DNA samples match with those found from the murder scene.” Replying to a question, he said the DNA of of Nahian will also be examined.
“Among the five people primarily identified as killers, we are now looking for the one absconding. We are hopeful that he would be arrested soon,” Monirul Islam added.
Meanwhile, talking to The Independent, a close friend of Ashamoni claimed that actually Ashamoni is confused over a positive identification of Nahian. Sometimes, she thinks Nahian was present during the murder, but other times, Ashamoni says she may not have seen Nahian on the spot.
Sad Al Nahian and Masud Rana, suspected members of banned Islamist militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), were arrested from Uttara and Mirpur areas of the capital as suspects in the Niladri Chatterjee murder case. Earlier, they had been arrested over the attack on blogger Asif Mohiuddin and had given confessional statements. On Aug 7, Niladri Chatterjee alias Niloy Nil was hacked to death by unidentified assailants inside his flat at North Goran in the capital. He was the fourth blogger killed in the country so far this year.
