Sri Lanka ponder some special plan to nullify the threat of Mominul Haque as the batsman almost single-handedly forced them to draw the first Test, hitting century in both innings as the first Bangladeshi batsman.
If his performance against Sri Lanka at home is taken into the consideration, he smashed third straight century, proving how particularly he likes their bowling attack. Before those back to back century (176 and 105) in the last Test, he had 100 not out against Sri Lanka, also in Chittagong when they last time toured Bangladesh for a Test series in 2014.
Let alone these three straight centuries, Mominul had 620 runs, boasted with colossal average of 62 against Sri Lanka, after playing 11 innings in six Test matches against them. He had also three fifty along with three 100 plus knock, meaning he had failed only five times to pass a half-century against the Lankans.
Sri Lankan fast bowlers adopted a strategy to neutralize Bangladesh batsman with a barrage of short pitched deliveries with which they became successful almost against all batsmen apart from Mominul. Their spinner could give some uncomfortable moment to others but Mominul was still unscathed. Even during the course of his two century plus knock, Mominul was hardly beaten by the bowlers, the another worrisome fact for the Lankan team management. So it is hardly surprising that Sri Lanka will be wary of him. “He played outstandingly in Chittagong. He has been good in Test cricket. He has a good temperament,” Sri Lanka skipper Dinesh Chandimal said.
“It is not an easy thing to score two centuries in both innings. It is always special. We have something up our sleeve against him in this game. I hope the bowlers execute it in the middle.”
