On behalf of President Md Abdul Hamid, a delegation of the Awami League (AL) yesterday submitted his nomination papers to the Election Commission (EC) for the presidential election. A nine-member delegation, led by AL general secretary Obaidul Quader, submitted the nomination papers to chief election commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, who is also the returning officer of the presidential election, at Election Bhaban in the capital. The last date for the submission of nominations was till 4pm yesterday. The papers will be scrutinised today (Tuesday). The last date for the withdrawal of nominations is February 10. The election, to be held in Parliament, is scheduled for February 18. Commerce minister Tofail Ahmed, industries minister Amir Hossain Amu and Parliament whip Iqbalur Rahim were in the delegation.
If the number of candidates is not more than one, President Md Abdul Hamid, whose tenure expires on April 23, will be elected unopposed for another term. President Abdul Hamid took office on April 24, 2013. In reply to a query, road transport and bridges minister Obaidul Quader said: “Hamid is an acceptable and respected person.”
“A President does not belong to any political party. He is the President of the whole country. So, we've chosen a person like him. He was the Speaker of Parliament for two terms and a seven-time elected lawmaker. He is a prominent freedom fighter. We've chosen him and the countrymen will accept him,” he added.
Replying to another query on what the AL expects of Abdul Hamid, Quader said: “The AL has no expectations. We'll be happy if he fulfils people's expectations.”
In his reply to another question on whether the AL has chalked out any programme for Thursday, the day on which the verdict in a corruption case against BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia would be pronounced, Quader said that the AL had no programme and would not announce any.
On Friday, an AL delegation, led by chief whip ASM Feroz, had collected the nomination papers for Abdul Hamid and handed them over to him at Bangabhaban.
As per the Article 123 of the Constitution, the presidential election has to be held between 90 and 60 days before the expiry of the President's five-year term.
