The dream of the Abahani Limited to win a treble was shattered when they suffered a massive 3-0 defeat at the hands of Arambagh Krira Sangha in the Walton Independence Cup Football tournament and thus the favourites were eliminated from the quarterfinal phase.

Held at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday, after winning the match Arambagh moved into the semi-final.  They made the biggest upset in the season when they outplayed Abahani with a deserving victory over the title aspirants.  However, on the day Abahani could not play with full authority, and Arambagh trying to play evenly gave huge trouble to title contenders as it looked Maruf’s men recovered well their fatigues of long run season started from last week (28th) of July 2017 and also won the match by 3-0.

Maruf, the only UEFA A license holder in the country, who used to play with a different technique against the tougher teams in the league, also applied his strategy of play for most of the time with counter attacks just keeping the defense intact on the day against Abahani.

Abahani, who went closer to take lead in the first half and could have at least taken 2-0 lead in the first half but Nabib Newaz Jibon and Saad Uddin could not mark the target from close range.

Nabib Newaz Jibon wasted the first real chance which came to his way on 40th minute when he was too late to take shot from edge of the area being unmarked and Saad Uddin’s superb header from six yards box narrowly missed the cross bar in the added time of the first half.

Abahani, obviously the day’s favourites were off target again inside ten minute of the second half when Rubel Meah took a sky-high shot closely from the post.

Abahni had to pay costly the missing of more than a couple of goals when Arambagh inflicted three goals defeat over the league champions. Abu Sufian Sufil, captain of Arambagh initiated the scoring when he made a cool finish of a cut back of Arif on 62nd (1-0).

Inspired by captain’s strike Arambagh doubled the advantage on 81st minute and this time it was a goal of totally outcome of keeping with an organised game when Mohammed Jewel kept his cool to beat Abahani keeper Shadul Alam Sohel with a good header (2-0).

Arambagh stunned the title aspirants with make the tally 3-0 and this time it was another excellent goal from Shahriar Bappy who blasted an angular right footer which curved at the last moment to go into the top corner of the far post on 85th (3-0).
