COMILLA: The 224-year-old Comilla Central jail, which was designed to accommodate 1,742 prisoners, is holding is 3,029, the double than its capacity, reports UNB.
The prisoners face nutrition, health and sanitation problems due to the overcrowding, according to a source in the jail.
The female inmates are suffering much for lack of adequate toilets in the prison.
The unhygienic condition of the jail is spreading different types of contagious diseases like skin problems, tuberculosis, typhoid, and dysentery, the source said.
Saimur Uddin, assistant jailer of the jail, said the number of male inmates is now 2,902, while that of female is 1,027 and children around 15. There are also eight foreign inmates.
The jail was established on 67acres of land in 1792. It was later modernised in 1962. However, there was no renovation works since then.
The official said a new building will be constructed at the same place soon.
